Seasoned travelers are well aware of the many different plugs and sockets in use around the world. But which plug is used where?
First-time travelers to foreign countries may only find out when confronted with the problem of trying to plug their razor or hair-dryer into a socket with an unsuitable configuration, like pounding a square peg into a round hole.
With this problem in mind, the IEC created a plug and socket zone that is both informative and practical. It explains why things are as they are today and how they might be improved. It also provides information on the plugs, sockets and voltage used around the world, along with illustrations of the various plugs and sockets available.

The IEC international community of experts has accompanied electrical and electronic developments since the very beginning. For energy generation those included first hydro and traditional thermal power sources such as coal, gas, and oil; later nuclear was added and today renewable energy from the sun, wind and water. At every stage the IEC has led the way in establishing International Standards for transmission, connection and use. It provides detailed technical guidance for implementer of emerging systems such as off-grid small-scale sustainable energy initiatives. Its primary drivers are safety, energy efficiency and systems compatibility, thus enabling safe and economic use of electrical and electronic goods and services wherever they are needed.
The IEC also administers Conformity Assessment Systems with thousands of testing laboratories that certify that components, equipment and systems meet its Standards.
